You’re Boring

I had a student tell me I was boring. I have had students tell me they are bored, the subject is boring, or even school is boring. I have never had anyone tell me I am boring before! I was really surprised, and, honestly, a little hurt and upset. This child has been difficult. Kicked out of last school – difficult. He needs a male teacher – difficult. Behavior contract -difficult.

This student is also quite smart and has been getting by in school not paying attention. Now he is being challenged and doesn’t know how to deal with it. When he knows what is going on he tries to control the discussion, when he doesn’t know he shuts down and finds some way to entertain himself (and those around him). The curriculum is catching up with him more than my brilliant teaching I think. But I have been thinking …a lot.

“I’m BORING”

As fate would have though I found this blog yesterday with some fresh ideas.

I am starting tomorrow. He is stuck with me for two minutes a day. For the next two weeks.

Can’t wait to hear how it goes. I have a few this might work for as well!

I’ll be interested to see if that technique works. I had a student like that when I was teaching 4th grade, but he never called me boring. He just never paid attention to me so basically I wasn’t engaging him. It took a little digging and found that he had a pretty sad home life so I began to spend time with him when I could. It took some time, but he eventually turned around and was both productive and happy. I look forward to seeing the results of your 10 day experiment!

Gee, I want to see if it works as well. I know that when you become more transparent to them, more human, sometimes that turns it around… but I am working with 13-18 yr olds and it’s a different arena. Just recently I was felt disrespected by a junior and I asked him to have a sit when the end of lunch bell rang so we could talk. I told him how I felt, and he said I was misunderstanding his sense of humor. Now we are cool with one another. Another case in point, today in a teacher’s classroom of sophomores, I had a serious heckler. I have been in this classroom before, and this young man uses very inappropriate innuendo and talks back with every comment disrupting the entire class. Mind you this is a Catholic high school. The teacher was there and literally did nothing, so I had to. Since I don’t classroom teach, I am the library media specialist, I don’t have the same opportunity to get to know all the students like the classroom teachers do. Discerning when it’s a discipline issue or when it’s a cry for help is not easy. I learn something new everyday. And I love this age group, which keeps me sane and coming back every day loving my job. Thanks for the great info and I am going to try this.
